Personal Life and Family
Born on February 20, 1988, Rihanna is a Barbadian singer belonging to Afro-Barbadian, Afro-Guyanese and Irish descent. She was born in Saint Michael, Barbados as a daughter of Ronald Fenty and Monica Braithwaite. Talking about her family members, she has got 2 brothers and 2 step-sisters and 1 step-brother from her fathers side.
Early Life
During her childhood, she grew up in a three-bedroom bungalow in Bridgetown and sold clothes with her father in a stall on the street for living. However, Rihanna’s father’s crack cocaine addiction and alcoholism affected Rihanna’s childhood to a great extent. Rihanna used to get in between her father and mother’s fight. Although she was just a little kid she had to face domestic violence her father used to do on her mother.
Rihanna used to have a intensely painful headache during her early childhood. As a result she had many CT scans for the headaches she suffered. It was so intensely painful that even the doctors used to think it was a tumor. Perhaps it wasn’t. Her health started improving after her parents’ divorce at her age of 14.
Rihanna as a child, used to listen to Caribbean musics like reggae also including American hip-hop and Rhythm-&-Blues(R&B). She had also joined Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and Combermere High School. During the days of her school life she loved to sing and hence once won a high-school talent show. She had performed a song of Mariah Carle in that school function. Consequently, She also formed a girl band with 2 of her female friends.
Her major step of forming a female band /girl-group collaborating with her 2 friends brought a turn in her life. In 2004, her talent attracted the attention of Evan Rogers, an American record producer. Evan Roger was the one who supported Rihanna Fenty to record a demo that led to an audition with the rapper Jay-Z, who at the time headed the Def Jam record label. Jay-Z signed the budding vocalist for Rihanna being impressed by her demo songs ” Pon de Replay” and ” The Last Time”. For her professional career, she adopted her middle name, Rihanna.
Although, at the beginning Jay-Z was not convinced, he invited Rihanna to audition for the label. At the audition, she impressed Jay-Z and his boss L.A. Reid, by singing Whitney Houston’s cover of “For the Love of You”, as well as the demo tracks “Pon de Replay” and “The Last Time”. Jay-Z hence was so absolutely certain about signing her after she performed her future hit single “Pon de Replay”. His boss L.A. Reid was so much impressed by her audition, ordering Jay-Z not to let Rihanna leave the building until the contract was signed.
Music of the Sun (August 2005)
As a result of her beautiful singing, Reid assigned Jay-Z and his team to close the deal which resulted in a six-album record deal with Def Jam. As soon as the contract signing, they spent recording songs of Rihanna for her debut album ‘Music of the Sun’. After completion of her recording, they had to pick a lead single. They choose ‘Pon de Replay’ because it seemed like the best song suited for a summer release. On May 2005, her debut single, ‘Pon de Replay’, was released under her professional career name “Rihanna”. This song charted successfully worldwide, peaking in the top five in fifteen countries not forgetting No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as the UK Singles Chart.
